Charrette Designers: Steve Mouzon

Steve Mouzon is a principal of PlaceMakers in Miami, Florida. PlaceMakers Pattern Books code at the scale of architecture, and are the only Transect-based pattern books currently published. PlaceMakers also codes at the scale of the city with SmartCode customization services for municipalities. PlaceMakers also performs a range of traditional town planning services on selected projects. Steve’s design work has won numerous design awards.

Steve is co-founder of The New Urban Guild, which is a group of architects, landscape architects & other New Urbanists dedicated to the study and the design of true traditional buildings and places native to and inspired by the region in which they are built. Its members have long focused on the environments of the classical/vernacular spectrum. The Guild also is in the process of publishing a Plan Book of homes designed for traditional neighborhoods.

Steve has authored or contributed to a number of publications in recent years, including the Public Works Manual (co-authored with Andres Duany & Daisy Kone). Other publications include Biltmore Estate Homes (Southern Living), Architectural Elements: Traditional Construction Details (McGraw-Hill), 1001 Traditional Construction Details (McGraw-Hill) & the Charter of the New Traditional Architecture. Upcoming books include a 2-volume monograph on the works of Charles Barrett (also co-authored with Andres Duany), Downtown Redevelopment Guidelines & The Four Realms of Architecture. McGraw-Hill has just published his Traditional Construction Patterns.

Steve is also continuing to shoot new editions of his Catalog of the Most-Loved Places. The Catalog typically includes every structure built before about 1925 in various historic towns or districts. There are currently dozens of volumes in the Catalog with several more soon to be released. The Catalog began in the South, with volumes on both famous districts such as the French Quarter and lesser-known jewels such as Mooresville, Alabama and Beaufort, South Carolina. Recent volumes include Bath, England, Pienza, Italy, Antigua Guatemala and St. George’s Bermuda. The images include not only every structure in the district, but also street & sidewalk shots, which fill in the details of the essential character of the district.

Steve has been an advocate for traditional town planning & smart growth since the early 1980’s. Most of Steve’s work is traditional and classical in nature. Steve has one of the best private architectural & town planning libraries in the region at over 2,000 volumes, and backs it up with a library of over 14,000 slides, plus the 40,000 images of the Catalog. Steve is currently the Town Architect at Gorham’s Bluff, The Preserve and The Waters, all located in Alabama and is a consultant to Town Architects elsewhere.
